What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Nelson and the wider area has a good set of MTB tracks and trails to suit all abilities and age groups which I feel is serving the MTB fraternity well. If elected I would like to see the facilities that have already been created and proven to be of benefit well maintained and more engagement with track users to understand their thoughts on how these assets can be further utilised by both ratepayers and visitors. One of my main aims is to increase transparency in council decision making and real benefit to the community for money spent.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

The cycle trail network that is being developed is a good asset for general recreation. The Nelson to Rabbit Island ride is a first class example that can be utilised by a diverse range of the community. I feel more has to be done to make inner city commuting safer as it would help to alleviate school traffic congestion and encourage more residents to cycle and walk.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I am standing on the furthering the core principals of Democracy, Accountability and Transparency in council processes. If these principles are applied in good measure to all decision making then we will have good results that are acceptable to the majority, meet financial restraints and ensure facilities are fit for purpose.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

I lived in Osaka Japan for 12 years and started MTBing to get out of the city. I developed a MTB track that incorporated a train trip to 500mtrs above sea level and was a loop track. This hobby allowed me to enjoy time biking, keeping fit and track building in the forest. This was crucial to maintaining a balance to my life while working and living in a high stress society of 6 million very busy people. Unfortunately due to family and work commitments and my political activities I have not been able to get out on my bike as much as I would have liked since returning to NZ.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Tourism NZ markets our region as a key year-round mountain biking destination. Our climate, spectacular natural environment, top-class events, and quality and variety of trails sets us apart. From the airport to trail peaks, infrastructure and information is in place and our gondola leverages further investment in outdoor recreation. Families mountain bike together on weekends and biking visitors from around NZ and the globe are warmly welcomed to enjoy everything that makes this a great destination to live and play. Some decide to move here bringing their businesses and family. Our home-grown talent wins gold at the Olympic Games.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

We’re a model community where cycling every week is the experience of most Nelsonians, regardless of age. Our network is integrated with both safe on-road cycle lanes and off-road links for the less confident. Bottlenecks have been removed and we’ll have good east-west connections across the city, slower speed limits on residential streets, and kids safely cycling to school. Electric bikes will be common and cycle storage is available. On weekends we’ll cycle to markets, rivers and around our waterfront boulevard to the beach. We’ll be proud of the Great Taste Trail that builds a regional economy and identity.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Continue to engage with critical partners like NMTBC. Continue to champion mountain biking and cycling capital expenditure, integrated planning and events when presenting the annual and long term plans to councillors and community. With NRDA recognise mountain biking and cycling in our regional identity. Target investment and partnership from other councils, private sector and central government. Further develop our great rides by restoring and improving the Dun and linking the Great Taste Trail along the coastal route to the city. Introduce more entry level tracks and get the gondola project to the next phase. A Sports and Recreation Committee keeps its finger on the pulse.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

Ten years on I’m still a mountain bike beginner. I love the freedom even if I’m not very good. Through Annual and Long Term Plans I’ve successfully brought proposals to council to increase funding for mountain biking and the gondola, while continuing to maintain funding for our waterfront link and schools programme. I secured councils first funding to establish the Cycles Trails Trust. What a great regional investment that was. As a Rotarian I’ve been on the tools constructing boardwalks. I’ve written many letters of support for central government and trust funding, and personally advocated for and secured $3M from the Urban Cycleways Programme.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I understand the immense potential presented by MTB infrastructure and events and commit to unlocking the holdups that are still hindering development. I commit to giving full, careful consideration and support to either developing a new world class event or hosting a leg of an existing world MTB event in Nelson. The kind of investment that we have seen for Cricket and Rugby world cup hosting in Nelson City would have, I think, even greater results if applied to MTB – part of Nelson fastest growing recreational pursuit. I also support initiatives that will encourage MTB businesses either existing or new.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

I fully support active transport options for Nelson City, and will encourage our schools to in turn encourage their students to choose cycling, walking or public transport as their means to get to school. I will continue Nelson’s strong focus on cycling networks, and continue to champion the city to sea cycle walkway link. I undertake to provide better cross-city cycle linkages and aim to provide better emphasis on active transport solutions to reduce congestion. I will progress work on a coastal route for cyclists from the city to the Cycle trail past Tahuna Holiday Park, the Golf Course and the Airport.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Real leadership as the Mayor of Nelson. Unlock holdups to progress. Maintain and uphold MTB infrastructure and activity as a key driver to economic progress in the region. Finish and uphold the Offload strategy and put in place a real, achievable implementation plan. Continue real dialogue with members of the MTB fraternity - both club members and business owners

I mountainbike at Rotoiti from time to time - I love the speargrass facility I am a collector of vintage road bikes. (commuter not race) I purchased a civia halstead delivery bike in an attempt to start quaxing - with mixed success - but I love it. I enjoy chatting with the Alton st team.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Very supportive. Sad however that mountain biking is not accessible to poor people. Social inequality, stress, technological unemployment and environmental degradation are threatening our very survival. The corrosive monetary system is accelerating our demise. We no longer need money. The Resource Based Economy bring equitable solutions to all human problems. All. In the future, when everything is free and all work is voluntary, we will be free to build the most amazing tracks and ride them whenever we want to.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Currently stifled and restricted by monetary constraints, we are forced into polluting cars at present. When the false notion of 'affordability' is removed, we will be free to embrace sustainable transport vehicles entirely. Modern engineering, construction and manufacturing technologies enable functional, innovative and sustainable solutions to transport, leisure, industrial and residential requirements. This is the 21st century after all. The excuse of not having enough 'money' to realise our potential and to nurture and care for all is no longer relevant or acceptable.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Introducing the concept of a Money Free, Resource Based Economy will have a greater enabling, freeing and civilizing effect on society than any other event in human history. If you guys want incredible, breathtaking, free access, unlimited trails throughout this country, with the time, equipment, friends and energy to ride them with, boy can we help you.

Built and rode some of the first 'mountain bikes', back in the early '70's. Still use bikes, of a similar age lol , today for local transport. Wish I could 'afford' a nice modern one.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

More of it. It ticks all the boxes: it’s fun, healthy, world class in Nelson and economically sound. I’m part of the current Council which heard great feedback on this year’s annual plan. We agreed to allocate $178,000 for mountain biking tracks and projects. I don’t want that spending held up. My vision is community enjoyment and a world class attraction.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

More of it. Nelson already outstrips the NZ average on people cycling to work (8.7 percent versus 2.9 percent nationally). That was recorded back in 2013 so those numbers will be growing. But the target is much higher and it makes sense to be far higher with our favorable climate and geography. What we're a bit short on and need to roll out is infrastructure for less confident cyclists away from traffic. That’ll significantly increase numbers (school kids for one) and have a big impact on reducing congestion problems too (as well as all the social and health benefits of cycling). Cycleways and shared pathways for that kind of user have been held up for too long.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I might have answered this already. Greater awareness and impetus. Council leadership: encouraging people to realise the social, economic and health benefits of providing mountain biking and cycling. Getting the infrastructure in place for city commuters - actually prioritising and delivering it.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

I'm a Nelson City Councillor now and my voting record over the last three years has been in support of mountain biking and cycling initiatives, growth and infrastructure. I’ll continue to support it. I see huge benefits to our region (economically) and our people (health and social) with this. It has been tricky at times getting this done, and if I’m re-elected I will really push to progress mountain biking and cycling infrastructure.

I'm all in favour of more people exercising as well as enjoying our beautiful region. Families especially need to get out more and bond. We have a gorgeous city and mountain bike trails/paths, lets utilise them!

Yes. I have cycled the Rameka and the Brook trail. I still regard myself as an amateur! However, I enjoy road riding also and try to do this at least 2 times a week.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I see the sport of Mountain Biking as a win win for all concerned - community eg. greater fitness, better health, friendships, economic benefits. Council to provide the funding for track development. The club to look after the maintenance & management of the tracks. Council & club, partner to provide ancillary facilities eg. BarBQ, shelter, water, toilets, seats & tables etc etc. Goals/targets need to be set (between club & council) as to how many kilometres of new track to be built each year and together continually seek new land/areas for further track development.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

My desire is to establish a network of cycle ways servicing our city & suburbs. This would allow people of all ages to cycle freely & safely round our community, while saving on fuel & significantly reducing pollution. I will promote (strongly) the haven/rocks cycle way concept (seaside boulevard) and will endeavour to encourage a new council to take the cycle way (on a deviation) through the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park (owned by NCC) round the Airport perimeter (owned by NCC) to join up again, with the cycle way out to Richmond. This would add to the experience, for people cycling to the south of Nelson.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Make it happen - by encouraging other councillors to see/appreciate my vision & plan. Ensuring that sufficient funds are set aside (in future NCC plans both annual & 10 year) to meet forward planning for track development & ancillary facilities.

Partner/family/friends involved - me - I just enjoy the experience of the wind blowing in my face & being able to sing out loud with out anyone hearing me. I'm also an advocate.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Yes to supporting mountain biking in Nelson and Tasman As a Trustee for Rata Foundation (ex Canterbury Community Trust) for a number of years now, I have been supporting the development of cycling in our region. It is outstanding that our region has such a wealth of tracks and at a level that achieved an international gold standard. A big upside is the great visitor attraction which supports our outdoor tourism. To assist youngsters to become involved in a healthy activity Rata has just approved the support for purchase of 10 bikes in Nelson Intermediate School. Yes to supporting the Matai area development, as a combined facility. We support the annual Cycle Feast as a promotion to a healthy and exciting activity. So a big YES to supporting the growth and maintainance of existing tracks and congratulations to those that have put in the hard yards.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Yes to supporting cycling. I have been a big supporter of our cycle trails for a long time now. Who would have thought we would have over 200,000 people cycling through Mapua. Including funding for adding in the toilets to that cycle trail as they were missing off the original plans, small but important point. As a Rata Trustee I have worked with various cycling groups including TDC and NCC to develop cycling tracks with the latest one being adding in the Spooners Tunnel and making that route available for locals and tourist supporting our economy. The other project under construction is the Velodrome at Saxton Field as a community facility. A supporter of cycling for transport and a healthy way to get around with the challenge being safty and education of all road users.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I have been part of the funding group for the cycle trails and the latest addition of Spooners Tunnel to the cycle trail network and I note that Taperwera community wish to extend that to their area. Present development of the Velodrone at Saxton Field Complex is one we are assisting funding. I have been involved as part of the early discussions on the Matai area opportunity. I will be an advocate for cycling and recreation activity if I make the selection onto the NCC.

Look to develop a family friendly bike park and adventure playground including zipline and luge at the top of Emano St and linked to a cafe at the top of Princes drive via a gondola or cable car.

I have an electric trike i use for pickups and deliveries in my burgeoning cookie business run out of the Ruckery at Founders Heritage Park. I regularly use Rocks rd and the shared pathway along Queen Elizabeth II Drive. It is my preferred mode of transport and cycle route for work and pleasure.

Support and promote cycling as a sporting and recreational activity of choice in Nelson where participation is encouraged by Council planning decisions. AND. To make riding a bike to work or school an easy and safe choice for the majority of the population.

As a prospective new Councillor without detailed knowledge of the workings of Council it is difficult to promise specific actions but I can say I will be committed to making sure cycling is a key part of recreational, tourism and roading decision making processes.

MTB have been working with Council. I support a collaborative approach. I am not going to plan something for a group I am not actively involved in (in a physical sense). I have seen too many friends get very hurt doing this activity! I would rather jump out of a plane. That doesn’t mean I don’t support it for those who do want to participate. I am more interested in hearing from the users and put them with staff who, together, can work towards the desired joint outcome.

To continue as a Council that supports and helps fund the activity of Mountain Biking and the creation of suitable tracks, just as we do already for a wide gamut of sporting and outdoor activities.

I personally cycle to work every day, rain or shine. Cycling is great method of transport in our region, though we need to continue to look at all areas that we can improve the cycling network & infrastructure.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Continue to champion cycling at the Council table. Lead by example by using my bike as preferred method of short distance travel. Also continue to work closely with my local community in enabling both walking and cycling initiatives, especially in the Brook Valley where I live and have an affinity with and cycling and walking are very popular.

I personally both commute by bike, and play in the Codgers track area with my family which is on my doorstep. I am on the Board of Trustees of Sports Tasman which is very pro the activity and getting people of all ages involved in mountain biking, as our motto states """"More People, More Active, More Often"""".

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Over the next 10 years I want Nelson to become known internationally as Australasia's best all round mountain biking destination. This includes the city hosting bigger international competitions and events. Just as importantly I want Nelson to become the number 1 choice for family mountain biking holidays. I see Council supported track building and facilities and the gondola as vital parts of this.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

If Nelson is to fulfill its potential, it's important the city becomes the best place to be a cyclist in New Zealand. We've made a good start but if we're really going to become a place that, to quote Sir Paul Callaghan, ""talent wants to live"" we have to go further. We need more cycleways, a shared pathway around the waterfront, more tracks, more of everything that makes it easier for everyone - young and old - to ride a bike. It has greatly frustrated me that so many cycle infrastructure projects have been put on the backburner this term.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I have been the loudest voice on Council in support of the gondola and one of the loudest in support of new tracks and cycling facilities. If re-elected, I will continue to fight for better facilities for all kinds of cycling because increasingly cycling is one of the things that defines us as a city and gives us an enviable point of difference. I also believe Council needs a dedicated staff member whose role it is to advance cycling. In fact, I’d like to see a team dedicated to cycling. This would speed things up.

My bicycle is my main form of transport and for many years I've advocated for cycling through my work in the media. I'm proud to be the father of two young boys who go almost everywhere by bike. I was one of the first people at Victoria University to get a mountain bike back in the 1980s and in the 1990s spent four years in Asia where, again, a bicycle was my main way of getting around. In 1994 I completed an eight-month mountain bike tour of Southeast Asia. It was a truly awesome experience.

I am not involved personally in Mountain biking, but my extended younger family are. I would support any mountain biking as a recreational activity.

I admire the courage of those who cycle on our public roads at present - I generally think our roads are not safe enough at present to share an increased volume of cyclists . I do not believe that shared cycleways are a good idea for both cyclists and pedestrians - I would prefer to keep them separated.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Until I get on the Council, I am not in a position to know just what resources are available to help , or how mountain biking has already benefitted from Ratepayer funding - compared to other recreational activities.

I installed the Power System for the base area at the top of the Mountain Bike Park up the Wairoa Gorge some years ago.

Nelson is New Zealand’s premier mountain cycling destination making a significant contribution to the local regional economy. There is an extensive network of mountain bike trials catering for all ages and abilities. Mountain biking (and active recreation) is supported and valued by the wider community.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Cycling is safe, enjoyable, healthy, economical and environmentally friendly activity that is a fundamental part of a sustainable and integrated transport system in the Nelson region. There is a recognition that people cycle for different reasons; and the different needs and purposes are taken into account when planning and providing for cycling, whether it is cycling for transport, commuting, recreation or sport.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Advocate and support council funding to improve and extend cycling and active transport infrastructure. Advocate for the commencement of the Rocks Road Shared Pathway and walking/cycling connection between the central business district and the Haven Precinct. Advocate for funding or subsidies that would make the environment safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Issues relating to shared pathways are investigated and guidelines established to encourage compatible shared usage. Facilitate the use of NCC estate for mountain biking. Support the Gondola project.

Just a mere recreational cyclist, both road and mountain biking and an occasional commuter cyclist. Used to be competitive road cyclist. Supporter and participant in the local Critical Mass rides

I'm supportive of Mountain Biking. If you can record my support in the meantime, I think it's a great sport to be involved in and has huge potential to attract visitors here. I'm aware of the gondola project and that Council has provided extra money for a closer study to be made. If I'm elected to Council, we'll no doubt reviewing the case and decisions will need to be made on all the facts and further consultation as necessary. Obviously I can't pre-empt my thoughts on a process that has yet to come to fruition.

Nelson is a unique geographic region offering a wide range of options for mountain bikers at different levels of confidence and skill. These opportunities are optimised to increase access to locals and travellers. Where appropriate there are sensitively used shared pathways with trampers, walkers for more advanced skill and/or remote regions.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Nelson has established some unique and highly useable cycleways throughout the transport network. There are some linkages that need to be improved and many more opportunities to be enhanced. The plans for Rocks Rd need to be implemented as soon as possible. Continue to promote and encourage cycling as a safe and appropriate option to other forms of transport, for fitness, wellbeing and cost savings.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Continue to advocate for support and facilitation of groups to advance the cycling options for all ages and abilities. Continue to use my electric bike for commuting and actively promote others to do so as an alternative to cars. I would actively encourage the completion of the Great Cycle triangle - which I think will/could become a national attraction very soon. We have a special opportunity to be realised. Thank goodness we have such groups as Bike Nelson Bays and The Cycle Trails Trust and all the active advocates here.

I have had an electric bike for over 3 years and regularly commute to work - over 3000kms to date. I have friends who mountain bike at least weekly, and enjoy the range of options available here in Nelson.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I support the ongoing development and refurbishment of mountain biking tracks in the Nelson City surrounds along with the establishment of a hub in the Brook Valley and sharing of the Maitai Valley Golf Club premises. I see mountain biking as an important contributor to our local economy. I have worked with NCC on establishing the Draft Front Country Tracks and Trails Strategy and I am very supportive of the content of the document. I found it inclusive and commend Andrew Petheram on the work he has put into it. I look forward to working with your representatives.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

I support the creation of cycleways for active travel where a need is established. I would also like to see a lowered speed limit of 40 kmh for cars on local roads. I am an inner City cyclist and I can see the need for our inner City to be more cycle friendly. A 30 kmh limit for cars within the CBD would be preferable. I support separate or segregated cycling/walking on Rocks Road and where ever possible because I believe both cyclists and walkers are safer and more comfortable in such an environment. I am a cyclist and a walker.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I would actively lobby Council staff and elected representatives to support and establish lowered speed limits for cars on local roads and within the CBD. I am open to looking on site and learning from the various mountain biking groups about their activities and seeing where I can help.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

I am a cyclist and I live in the inner City and use my bike for trips into town. My son is a keen mountain biker and visits Nelson several times a year. He enjoys the tracks here. I would like to be able to cycle to the beach in summer but find the road too dangerous to travel on. This winter I did the Great Taste Trail.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

My vision is that the Nelson Tasman region continues to build on its national and international reputation as a mountain biking centre with a full range of mountain biking opportunities, facilities and events. This requires all stakeholders to work together to achieve an integrated, adequately resourced and planned approach to ensure we can deliver on the reputation and the personal, community, social and economic benefits are fully realised. This also needs to ensure that the tracks and facilities are adequately maintained and the promotion and marketing efforts of the opportunities, facilities and events are coordinated and sustained

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Having worked on the Regional Cycling Framework 2015 – 2025, my vision is aligned with that in the framework. Namely “the Nelson Tasman region is the heart of biking and that our region is an integrated cycle mecca well known for its people-friendly spaces, facilities and events supported by a local culture that truly embraces all forms of cycling”. An integrated, collaborative and regional approach to cycle planning and ongoing improvements in facilities and attitudes that makes cycling safer and more attractive to all ages, abilities and provides for all cycling interests so that we are regarded as a national and international leader.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I plan to continue my involvement in the Regional Cycling Forum and try to ensure that cycling organisations and other stakeholders are positively engaged in working towards achieving an agreed vision and have adequate input into the Council’s track strategy before it is adopted. Will continue to advocate for a safe link from the Nelson CBD to Tahunanui and the Stoke cycleways. I will continue on the Saxton Velodrome Trust to see it completed along with the associated cycle training facility. Will also advocate for education on how to share tracks and paths and the completion of the gondola business case.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

Active member of the Regional Cycling Forum - worked on the Regional Cycling Framework 2015-2025 and presented the Forum’s submissions to both Councils on their draft Long Term Plans. Last year when nobody wanted to do it, I facilitated a forum for mountain bikers and other users of tracks in Nelson’s eastern foothills. Currently participating in the preparation of Council’s tracks strategy. As a former City Councillor I have strongly advocated for the preparation of the cycling strategies and implementation funding to improve cycling facilities and to increase numbers. Cycling is my main form of transport. A trustee on the Saxton Velodrome Trust.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

With our wonderful climate cycling is a great option and to be encouraged. As a cyclist myself I don't use the shared pathways (they are great for children and less confident cyclists) or the St Vincent St cycle lane. I am concerned that traffic calming measures make roads narrow and dangerous for cyclists.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Ensure the needs and safety of cyclists are taken into account in road planning. Where possible ensure road seal is flush with the gutter. Promote the safety of cyclists. Continue to develop cycle way networks. Liaise with cycle clubs.

I have had no involvement with mountain biking but am supportive. Cycling is my preferred form of transport and main form of exercise - I cycle most days. My favourite ride is along the waterfront.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I have always supported mountain biking activities in the region. This includes trails for all categories of users. However it is now time to consider where trails are planned that consideration is given to communication issues. Should someone decide to ride alone, then somewhere there should be a record so as if they come into trouble and have an accident, help could be dispatched earlier than if know one knows where they are. This is becoming more important with the number of serious injuries occurring on some of the more remote trails. The more adventure trails that can accommodate riders of all skills base (families) is another aspect of the area I support.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

This is ongoing and I have always supported cycling as part of the whole transport solution to moving people in NZ. This includes recreation as well as the commuter networks. Schools must be encouraged to reinstall cycle sheds for children's cycles and parents must be encouraged to to support their children using a cycle to get to and from school. To much reliance is placed on parents giving their children transport.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

No change to what I have supported in the past three years. We have come a long way and there is still a long way to go.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

You will have seen that I received the award for the the completion of the St Vincent St cycle-way and I was pleased to do. My son and grandson are actively involved in trail riding and I encourage that. Maybe time for a skill test regime to ascertain the level of trail a person should ride. Similar to skiing.

I see Nelson continuing its journey to becoming a world leading location for mountain biking of all abilities. People I meet in Nelson are often keen riders, I have even bought my vintage hard tail out of retirement lately, My Son and I had a awesome time at the Kaiteriteri park. Mountain biking has also become a great way to socialise, getting people of the couch and enjoying the Nelson lifestyle.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

We need a complete cycle network that anyone can use safely.That is designed in tandem with clubs and keen riders. Cycle ways should have design priority as half way solutions are often as dangerous as the road. E bikes and future advancements will see more large scale use of these networks also. I want to see a network where you can simply put your kids on it any direction to go and know that they're not having to dodge cars. Cycle ways desperately need improving into the C.B.D. centre.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I will be listening and supporting the good work already underway. A focus for me if elected would be young people, especially those who maybe have missed out on getting into cycling or are from a under privileged background into some sort of NCC funded program. A second area of focus is insuring that if the arterial road goes ahead that a replacement is made for the current cycle way that is world class.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Nelson/Tasman has the potential to become a world class mountain biking destination. Both Councils need to work together on a plan to realise this vision. Other sports in the region have justifiably had significant infrastructure investments over recent years from both Councils which, along with code contributions, have created top class sporting facilities with events to match. The sport of mountain biking, given its growing popularity locally and world-wide has the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the community. Now is the time for comprehensive planning and investment to support this sport for locals and visitors alike.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

When I moved back to Nelson 18 years ago there was little infrastructure for transport and recreational cycling though-out the region. Some good work has occurred since then but we could do a lot better. Let’s keep working on removing the barriers that stop people using cycling as their primary means of transport. How can we make it safer for more kids to cycle and scooter to school? How can we replicate in more parts of the city the Railway Reserve that runs close to my home in Stoke- one of the most used public reserves in the City.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

What I will commit to ? 1.Support initiatives by the Mountain Bike Club to further develop the sport for our community and those that visit Nelson. 2.Work on ensuring the Council engages the community and stakeholders to develop a vision and plan for all forms of cycling in Nelson. 3. Make sure there is collaboration with the Tasman District Council on cycling initiatives so we can have a region wide approach to cycling infrastructure. 4. Come and do some digging!

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

I am a keen cyclist- rode from Cape Reinga to Bluff on the inaugural Tour Aotearoa earlier this year-amazing to see your country one pedal stroke at a time, (do it one day if you can!). I am a regular commuter cyclist from my home in Stoke to town, and enjoy getting my Scott Spark out on the trails in Nelson, the Richmond hills and Kaiteriteri. Have biked the Heaphy a couple of times, done the St James loop and been up to Ghost Lake(before the track through was finished) so had a great downhill back to Lyell!

I fully support mountain biking in Nelson and Tasman and am a keen mountain biker. I support the Nelson Mountain Bike Club in it's efforts to create and maintain an extensive network or tracks. This is a major asset for our community, serving locals who enjoy mountain biking and also is a significant attraction for people visiting the region.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

I support cycling on and off road for our community. I support shared use of the road and where possible the development of off road cycleways. I am a strong advocate for the completion of the Tasman Great Taste Trail and fully support our application to the government's fund which is essential for the completion of this loop. I also support funding the development required for the Dunn Cycleway for it to be recognised as a Great Ride.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

The main thing I need to do to realise my vision is to get out on my bike. My time is always stretched but Saturday mornings are very important to me. I am also working closelt with the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust in order to secure government funding for the completion of the Tasman Great Tast Trail and the Dunn loop

Why not have Nelson region as the worlds greatest mountain bike experience. It would help our tourism in a sustainable way and be a huge asset for active residents. What a great activity for my grandchildren. Having travelled the world I know we have a special region. We need to do sustainable tourism. Great spin offs for accommodation providers, cafes etc. Biking is a perfect fit. It is the sort amenity expenditure I would support.

I am a great user of our ""Great Taste Trail"". Absolutely support funding these amenities. They are also a good investment. My vision is to promote the trail to the world. Not only would it be good for our regional economy but also good to have overseas people just enjoying the good things in life. Also support any way in which people can bike without worrying about traffic. This means dedicated cycle ways but am also aware there are places where this would be very difficult to achieve. Lets look to the future.

I support continuing the funding programme that is in place. I think we have done well. Once the trails and tracks are completed, or near completed, we need to actively promote them. Maybe the 'Economic Development Association', or its successor.

As a member of the Tasman District Council, my role is to help facilitate the vision of the mountain biking interest group. I regard it as a healthy sport with a good future..locally and internationally. I am interested in supporting opportunity in Rabbit Island, Kingsland forest & Tunnicliff Forest.

I support the development of cycle ways. I prefer to keep them separate from motor vehicles. When separation is not practical, I support cycle lanes. It is an annual budget issue, make sure we add value every year, building up the asset.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I support mountain biking in all its forms. I live near the Richmond Hills and witness the many Mountain Bike users on the trails above our house. I like the tracks that have been developed solely for mountain bikes. Where walking and cycle trails come together I appreciate the care and consideration taken by riders to avoid other trail users. My vision is for council to further support clubs within Tasman so that people of all ages have access to public areas for recreation.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Over all, cycling is an underutilised but increasing form of transport. The construction of cycle ways has made it possible for cyclists to ride to their destinations. The upsurge of recreational cyclists has been phenomenal. Many locals now ride daily for fun. As a result some small businesses have grown to service them. A fitter community is a healthier community. I support the completion and extension of cycle ways for transport, recreation and tourism. Clubs who support, guide and direct members of their groups should be encouraged.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I will ne new to council and as such I am not really aware of the needs of cyclists and mountain bikers. If I can support the construction of cycle ways that encourage people to ride to work and to their destinations I will. The outcomes I am after are, fitter citizens, safer ways to cycle without having to share roads with cars and heavy trucks, and places for groups of people with a common interest socialising and riding their way around the district. I would also support cyclists who want to compete physically with the environment and each other.

I am not a cyclist but I have family members who have ridden both for competitive and recreational purposes. I have seen the outcomes of track makers on the Richmond Hills. My vision is to build healthier, more resilient communities. Having dedicated areas for biking, walking, and outdoor activities- like mountain biking, is important for health and wellbeing of the community.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

I believe that Tasman is a jewel that we need to protect for ourselves and the generations to come. I would like to see the Council be proactive in relation to the obligations under section 14 of the Local Government Act which obliges Local Authorities to take a 'sustainable development approach', taking into account (among other things) the need to maintain and enhance the quality of the environment; and the reasonably foreseeable needs of future generations. Encouraging sustainable, viable, alternative forms of transport such as cycling, is part of my vision.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

My support of mountain biking is part of my wider vision for creating sustainable, livable, communities where health and wellbeing is promoted by council. I have served for three years on the Hospital Advisory Committee of the NMDHB. What happens in the community affects how efficiently the hospital board operates, and vice versa. I want to promote more connections between council and the community to get people engaging more in public spaces. It is not widely known but 'core services' are defined in the Local Government Act to include the maintenance of libraries, museums, reserves, and other recreational facilities and community amenities.

Mountain biking appears to be well taken care of by the various clubs dedicated to this cause. Tasman District Council should be concentrating on cycling / walking paths where all residents can benefit. If a Mountain Bike Park is constructed within the proposed Kohatu Motorsport / Adventure Park, Tasman District Council may have to spend quite a considerable amount of money on the Council owned part of the access road.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Cycling for work or recreational transport is growing at an amazing rate. I would fully support Tasman District Council completing the Great Taste Trail loop when the budgets set, permit. No doubt there will be additions of trails off the loop which may qualify for some Council funding also. I would also support any decision made by Nelson City Council on the solution to alleviate the problems showing up between walkers, cyclists and motor vehicles on Rocks Road.

Continue as per the Tasman District Council Long Term Plan budgets allow and participate in the setting of the next Long Term Plan, making sound decisions or judgements on any changes proposed.

During 2013-14, I was a member of the Motueka Coastal Group for the Cycle Trail Trust & active in supporting the Trail from Motueka through to Kaiteriteri, particularly for the underpass at Pukekoikoi/Turmers Bluff,.
Previously the Cycle Trail Trust had negotiated with the Keep Motueka Beautiful Committee the route from High St. Motueka through the inner estuary, to the Motueka quay, & then along to Staples St. (I was a member of the Keep Motueka Beautiful Committee supporting the use of the walkways for the Great Taste Cycle Trail.
There is the need to further extend the Trail from Motueka via the West Bank Rd.(initially) , & then through to Kohatu completing the loop. This section is not sufficiently signposted, & more "Share the Road" signs would be welcome.
There are some sections along the Motueka Quay which are quite stony & narrow. I'm told the section from Mapua to Tasman also requires maintenance.
Generally, as a Councilor, I will strongly encourage improved maintenance of the Cycle Trail, wider promotion of the Trail, & for the loop to be properly complete.
The level nature of Motueka allows for cycling to be a popular activity--& it is. I will support additional safety factors being instituted eg a separate lane along Pah St., Grey St., & Whakarewa St would service Parklands Primary School & Motueka High School. (This has been declined by the TDC, previously).
I cycle mainly for fitness & relaxation, mostly around Motueka, occasionally to Kaiteriteri & Tasman. My sons are keen cyclists, either road-racing or mountain-biking.
Both the Tasman Bays Promotions Assn in Motueka & the Nelson Regional Development Agency are to be encouraged to promote cycling as a major tourism activity in Nelson/Tasman.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Our region is already well placed as a MTB destination with great weather and over 300 kms of easily accessible trials across a range of different grades. This combined with the continued development of the great taste trial linking a number of these tracks together is all part of the reason we are one of the few IMBA gold ride centres worldwide. Adding more mid grade opportunities and working with the forest companies and Doc to develop opportunities in appropriate places should see this region stay a top place to ride for locals and visitors

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

The great taste trial and NCC cycleways already provide a good off road connection for all the main population centres in the waimea basin and as far Motueka this and a good climate year round make cycling a genuine transport option for a range of people. In the medium term improving the connection across the Mapua channel will be important as will making the side routes and connections easier and safer.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Continue to support council investment in the future stages of the GTT and the creation of a grade two track on rabbit island, and work with others to continue the development of the track network around the region. Help work through any conflicts that do arise between walking, horse riding and other recreations from time to time in some locations.

I ride in the forest areas surrounding my home and have three sons who have all riden bikes around the regions many trials all more adventurous than me. I have been involved in the Kaiteriteri MTB park from its inception through to the great range of trials it is today.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

The first point it that Mountain biking facilities are an essential recreational component for locals, and a drawcard for visitors to the area which should continue to be encouraged and supported. The number of cars seen with bike racks stacked in the holiday season is immediate evidence of how popular it is. The Great Taste Tasman Cycle Trail and more purist ""Mountain Biking"" tracks represent two distinct cycling demographics and it is a balancing act to meet the needs of both. I think close dialogue with the local clubs is essential in furthering Nelson/Tasman as a go-to destination for mountain biking.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

The modest population size, climate, and generally favourable contours mean cycling for transport is naturally a good option. The dedicated trails support this well today and provide the means for those inclined to cycle commute. I applaud the plans for the Velodrome and the natural uptake of cycling that it is likely to generate. The interest in school age kids in the velodrome will likely in time have an impact on other forms of cycling too.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

The very first step has to be close consultation with the clubs. There is no point in developing any plans independent of the clubs and cycling community. Growing up as a high school student in the Hutt Valley (Wellington) in the 1980's, I rode to school for years, used to race (road racing) in the local Wellington events (Aotea Lagoon series, Pauatahanui circuit), attended the annual national schools time trial championships at Levin and criterium on the Manfield auto circuit. Also occasional mountain biking, including one of the earlier Karapoti Classic races - on a rigid fork hardtail as everyone rode in those days! I still have that bike...

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Very supportive. Sad however that mountain biking is not accessible to poor people. Social inequality, stress, technological unemployment and environmental degradation are threatening our very survival. The corrosive monetary system is accelerating our demise. We no longer need money. The Resource Based Economy bring equitable solutions to all human problems. All. In the future, when everything is free and all work is voluntary, we will be free to build the most amazing tracks and ride them whenever we want to.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Currently stifled and restricted by monetary constraints, we are forced into polluting cars at present. When the false notion of 'affordability' is removed, we will be free to embrace sustainable transport vehicles entirely. Modern engineering, construction and manufacturing technologies enable functional, innovative and sustainable solutions to transport, leisure, industrial and residential requirements. This is the 21st century after all. The excuse of not having enough 'money' to realise our potential and to nurture and care for all is no longer relevant or acceptable.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

Introducing the concept of a Money Free, Resource Based Economy will have a greater enabling, freeing and civilizing effect on society than any other event in human history. If you guys want incredible, breathtaking, free access, unlimited trails throughout this country, with the time, equipment, friends and energy to ride them with, boy can we help you.

Built and rode some of the first 'mountain bikes', back in the early '70's. Still use bikes, of a similar age lol , today for local transport. Wish I could 'afford' a nice modern one.

Mountain biking has the potential to be one of Tasman's biggest tourist draw cards. I support the development of tracks in the region and better marketing of the resources available.

In general I think many of the cycleways were created in a substandard fashion just to claim the Government rebate. I think there needs to be more discussion about cycling for recreation on the roads and education of the cycling community about litter and inconsideration of other road users impacting the general impression of cyclists. I am open to hearing the issues impacting the cycling community.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I plan to be elected to council so that I have a voice for those who elect me, and I plan to work hard to make sure that voice is heard within council. I will remain contactable and if you have concerns or plans for improvement I will work with you to see them to fruition. I have no cycling agenda of my own, one way or the other.

I am an occasional trail rider with my family.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I support making many of the existing tracks available for mountain bikes by linking them up. There are many opportunities to expand the trails by working in with landowners and facilitating easements. Our region has come a long way and like many sports the TDC needs to reduce the red tape that often causes frustration with petty rules. TDC needs to be more friendly to all groups enjoying the great outdoors.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

My wife & I both have mountain bikes, My vision is to see more opportunity for all cyclists to travel our region away from roads where possible and the region is already doing this to some degree. I live on Westbank Road Motueka and this is very dangerous for cyclists and I would like to see a corridor for bikes up the Motueka Valley and many other areas around the region. I would like to see the tops of stop banks around our rivers made cycle friendly as these are away from the big trucks etc.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

If elected I will need to get a full understanding of the issues. I like to make sound decisions based on talking to all the parties over all the issues.

Have you had any involvement, support or interest in mountain biking and cycling our members may be interested in?

As I said my wife and I both have mountain bikes and we mainly travel on cycleways and trails and not on busy roads. The longest trip we have done is 35 km in one go but many short trips. We agree that our bikes gears and brakes work great but the motors need a bit of attention. Its great exercise and we enjoy feeling the rewards of a day out and a good workout. We are not in a club and just do our own thing.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

Mountain biking is growing and exciting recreational activity in our region. It is becoming an important part of the tourism experience here and it also has health and fitness benefits for the participants. It has resulted in many more people having access to and enjoying our local national parks and forests. It is a sustainable activity and helps promote environmental awareness and connection. Local government and government agencies have been responsive to the needs and responsibilities of the sector by and large. We need to encourage and help manage the growth and development of the various levels of facilities that make mountain biking a fully embedded part of activities in Nelson/Tasman.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

Cycling is flourishing in our region. Not only is it a popular recreational activity, it also has played its part in addressing sustainable transportation in our region. I have used an electric bike for my local transportation needs for two years and have encouraged others to ""leave the car at home"". The Tasman Great Taste Trail has always had my support and advocacy. The number of users, the rebirth of decaying rural villages, the regional connectivity, are all coming through as positive results. The part of the trail that goes past my place in Ruby Bay is popular with young families and older people as well as visitors and cycling clubs. The GTT needs to be recognised and supported by our leaders as one of the most important community and recreational development programmes in the last decade.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

If I am elected as a councillor I will be an active advocate for the sector and support changes to management plans and inclusivity that promote mountain biking and cycling. Communication and networking with clubs and stakeholder agencies is most important and is a key part of the kind of responsive, collaborative approach I would advocate for in local government.

I have an electric bike for local transportation, part of an 'early uptake' move away from unsustainable transportation. Others in my family are happily pedal-powered and I have enjoyed some cycle-cam virtual journeys that my sons have brought back from the wilds of Nelson/Tasman. I am an advocate rather than a trail digger personally, but I think that the community involvement and 'bottom-up' delivery of mountain biking parks and the GTT are quite inspiring. Well done.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

My tourist lodge is the only accommodation availoable on the 35 km road to the Heaphy Track , from Collingwood. Now that mountain bikes have access to this track I support any improvements to existing tracks,and access to opening up many more. I support mountain biking,and all local, and national government funding.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

My vision is that recreational cycling will become more and more a requirement for local body planning, apart from necessary road changes with cycle ways for tourist bikers,and locals commuting to work . Look to Holland for the best examples to plan this future. H/W 60 is now a tourist cycle road and needs planning for these cyclists from Transit New Zealand.

As a candidate for the Golden Bay Ward and aware of the increase in tourist bikers,and the campaigns of Victoria Davis who has worked so hard for cyclists in Golden Bay, I will support her to the full in assisting her in the battle for a better deal for cyclists.

Other than being behind Victoria Davis and her efforts to educate the Tasman District Council , and change the attitude of the bureaucratic system that frankly ignores so much of her efforts, should I be elected , I will fight for her vision and support her energy for the future of cyclists getting a fair go in Golden Bay.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I have no first-hand knowledge of mountain biking in the Nelson/Tasman region but a quick search on the internet shows me that it is a popular sport and that both Golden Bay and Nelson have active mountain bike clubs. The trails and rides look amazing, the Golden Bay Milk and Honey Race made my legs ache just reading about it. It is great to see that there are trails and rides for all levels from family to extreme and that there is a mountain biker ‘code’ that includes having fun, being considerate and no littering. A great code for life!

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

I am a fan of cycling - I have cycled all my life, nothing extreme, usually just getting to work. I currently live in an area where cyclists seem to have no knowledge of road rules which makes it so difficult to safely share the road with them. Because of this I know how important it is that cyclists are aware that they are road users just like any other vehicle and so must also know and abide by the rules. I like cycle paths/lanes and think cyclists should be required to use them if they are available.

What action do you plan to take in the next three years to support and realise your vision of mountain biking and cycling?

I do not have any planned action on mountain biking and cycling because I do not know yet what is needed. I would be happy to hear what bike club members have to say.

I have been a bike commuter in every place I have lived. Commuting by bicycle in cities makes a lot of sense. A long time ago I did cycle over the Takaka Hill, from Rangihaeata to Motueka, on my mother's three speed Hercules bike. When I say cycle, I pretty much pushed the bike up the Hill and sailed down the other side. It took me all day and I did it on my own. To this day I think it was a great achievement. I still have the bike - it spends its days slumbering in my dad's garage.

What is your vision of mountain biking in Nelson/Tasman?

I am running for Councillor in the Golden Bay ward and will comment mainly on mountain biking in that area. I am quite familiar with mountain biking in North America and am very impressed by the growth in the sport and its positive effects on tourism. Golden Bay differs in some degree with the rest of the region on that we are surrounded by National Parks. There are inherent difficulties in mixing biking and walking trails and the process has to be thoroughly worked through with DoC and user groups. Making it work is possible in some cases but it will take time. I believe that bike trails and road modifications for bikes are falling behind in Golden Bay compared with Nelson/Tasman. I support any workable and cost effective means of developing more opportunities for both mountain and road biking in Golden Bay.

What is your vision of general cycling for transport and recreation in Nelson/ Tasman?

We have to move with the times and include general cycling in the transport planning process. Increasing road safety is paramount as is linking existing developed biking routes to achieve an overall network. Biking routes are not a luxury and have to be recognised as an essential part of road transport.

I will support any reasonable initiatives brought to Council to enhance mountain or general cycling.
